Best book on psychiatry on the market! (he is my e-mail friend. Always there to give some encouraging word.) Of course, I have my own interpretation of "necessity". Society needs us. I mean if people didn´t have anyone (preferably a group) to compare themselves with (=feel better than) what would they do? (get a REAL feeling of self-worth.)
