I don´t know if you people out there know that the Swedish municipalities partly has taken over psychiatry? (I bet you don´t. Not even Swedes know.) That is, they have been given the right to take over the HEAVY cases (schizophrenia and so on). I would estimate the number of patients in this municipality psychiatry (kommunal psykiatri eller socialpsykiatri) to be at least 30.000-40.000!
So. What do these people do? What education do they have? The ones who BOSS this are generally ordinary social workers. The personel are not even real nurses. (de flesta är undersköterskor.) Some (few) are mental nurses. And no psychiatrist is ever employed by any municipality! (Sweden is divided into 290 municipalities. To a certain extent self-ruling. Every citizen belongs to a certain municipality. Depending on where they live.)
And how does it work? Nobody knows. Because noone has (hitherto) made a general survey of it. No paper/magazine writes about it. No TV-program has ever been made about it. It´s like it doesn´t even EXIST. (it was decided to start in parliament decisions made in 1992-93. Not exactly a new phenomenon.)
